Nafplio Nafplion Anapli

The Town of Nafplio

Nafplio, Nafplion, Nauplia as it is known, situated in the Argolic Gulf on the northeast side of the Peloponnese, was the first capital of Greece, is said to be one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, and is just 20Km from Anastasias Apartments, Iria.

This magical city will draw you back, more than once, during your holiday, with so much to see and do. Nafplion has very much a Venetian feel to it, with narrow streets, homes with Venetian style overhanging balconies and the famous Venetian Palamidi castle which towers above the whole town. From the top you can not only see the town and bay but also the Bourtzi which is situated in the harbour.

Small caique or fishing boats will take you across to this 1471 Venetian castle, which lies empty, but full of history. In the main square, Syntagma Square, along with cafes, restaurants and ice cream parlours, is the newly opened archaeological museum, closed for 4 years; it re-opened in 2009 and is certainly a must to visit. Other museums in Nauplia are the Folklore Museum, War Museum, Art Gallery, Toy Museum, Ouzo Museum, to name but a few.

For a more relaxing visit, narrow streets lined with numerous tavernas, the harbour front with a variety of coffee shops, bars, fish restaurants, choosing the small tavernas is recommended, wherever it is an ideal opportunity to relax and watch the world go by, enjoying Greek cuisine, wine, retsina or a local ouzo.
